Edge of Knife - Showing April 23, 2019
Our BC First Nations Studies 12 and Art teacher, Shannon McWhinney, had a request from her students to bring the movie “Edge of the Knife” to town. She has arranged for a screening at the Ucluelet Community Centre on April 23rd at 7:30pm. Admission is by donation and all proceeds raised will support the USS Nuu-chah-nulth language and culture classes.
Please make sure all Tla-o-qui-aht members know about his event.
Edge of the Knife is a feature length Haida language film about pride, tragedy, and penance. Adiits'ii, the lead character in the film, is mentally and physically pushed to the brink of survival and becomes Gaagiixiid/Gaagiid - the Haida Wildman. The Gaagiixiid is one of Haida's most popular stories, sustained over the years though song and performance. This project is a community initiative with strong support from the Haida people as well as from the Council of the Haida Nation.

Directors: Gwaii Edenshaw, Helen Haig-Brown
“Edge of the Knife” gives us a rare opportunity to hear the Haida language. In a 19th-century summer, two large families gather for their annual fishing retreat on the far-removed island of Haida Gwaii. Adiits'ii accidentally causes the death of his best friend Kwa's son and tormented by what he has done, spirals into insanity, becoming Gaagiixid, a supernatural being.
